Photo Tip Friday: 3 Tips for Using Strong Lines in Your Photography

Do you ever wonder what makes a compelling photograph? One way to catch attention is with strong lines. Used well, they make a picture stand out.

If you look around, you can probably find them right where you are. 

Let's look at some examples.

PHOTO 1: As I was climbing these stairs, in the snow, the stairs themselves caught my eye. Why? Because of the symmetry, strong lines, color, and roughness of the stones in contrast to the snow. Not only is the falling snow soft and round, but the collecting snow is uneven. This helps create contrast between the two objects. 

The color of the stones is actually a fairly warm brown, again, in contrast to the cold, white snow. 

In photo 1, the predominant lines run horizontally.

I was only in Warsaw, Poland for a day and a half. 

But I have to say, I developed a great respect for them. 

One lady even offered out of the blue to take my picture for me. How sweet!

Even though I was there in January, they still had their Christmas decorations up! So beautiful! They know how to decorate!

Monday's Musings: Snowy Memories of Mom

As many of you know, I lost my beloved mother in May of 2013. 

January of 2014 was my first birthday without her. I had no clue how difficult it would be. 

You see, back in January of 2013, I spent my actual birthday with mom in her hospital room. We joked about being together in a hospital 48 years prior. For my delivery. In a blizzard. In a blackout. Because the hospital was on auxiliary power, the elevator wasn't working . . . . My poor mom had to climb 5 flights of stairs. In full labor. With her fifth child. ME! 

I jokingly apologized for being such trouble. 

She apologized I had to spend my birthday in a hospital room with her. I told her there was no other place I'd rather be. And I meant it . . . . 

We lost her 3 months later. 

Photo Tip Friday: Learning to Deal with Over or Under Exposed Photos, Part 2

Have you ever had photos that were washed out or too dark to really enjoy? Then you've had a problem with under or over exposed pictures.

Today's tip is actually really simple and very easy to apply. 

It's understanding where your camera focuses and how that affects the exposure.Let's get started.

Remember that I said I found myself on a somewhat unexpected journey?
Well, it was to Warsaw, Poland and Belfort, France! 

Here are a couple of shots from the airplane on the way. 
I asked my hubby to get us seats on the left side of the plane...
I was hoping that I'd get to see the Aurora Borealis!!

And I did!!! It was amazing at 36,000 feet!
